Questions for Selecting a Conveyor

4 min read

When it comes to conveyors MISUMI is a proud partner for many customers that use them in different applications in a range of industries. Conveyors are generally used for transportation purposes between stations of components or inside equipment to move components as well. One of the questions that we keep being asked is how do you choose a conveyor since there are so many options. Our goal is to help you with that!

The first step is, of course, to know what your application is and what industry you are serving, it could be used for automotive, medical, packaging, warehouse use, or food, each will have its standards to follow. Each will use different speeds, different load limits, different belts styles, and of course different frames depending on the location.

You will need to gather different information to pick the correct conveyor for you, first is what is being transported, will it be on a pallet or it will lay on the belt?

A pallet will have to use a timing belt conveyor while everything else can work with a flat belt conveyor.

Does the item being conveyed have special requirements that will affect the kind of belt that can be used with it?

There are multiple color belts, whether they are for appearance or required for what is being done. Food grade, oil-resistant, antistatic, accumulation purposes, incline, decline, and the list goes on but that will make a difference in the kind of belt being used.

What is the load of what is being transported, will the load be accumulated or a single item at a time? What is the maximum speed required and average speed as well?

The load and speed work together, there are limitations based on the speed for the load and vice versa there are limitations to the speed based on the load.

How will it be controlled and what is the voltage that will be used for the system?

Will the system have a single speed, control box, VFD, or PLC controlled. Also, there are multiple AC voltage options just like there are DC voltage options so knowing that can help choose the right controller option.

What is the width and length of the product being conveyed? At the same time, what are the size limitations of where the conveyor will be going? Knowing this will be helpful as this may change the kind of conveyor you can use. This might limit you to end drive conveyors, center drive, or even offset drive conveyors to make sure it will work on the final location it will go on.

The last question is will it be attached to the frame of the equipment or does it need legs? Will it also need any accessories to make it work?

Those can usually be added while ordering a conveyor or separately as needed while designing and building the final system.

No longer do you have to design a conveyor from scratch, MISUMI has all the components you need saving you precious design time. From frameworks components to conveyors belts, MISUMI can provide everything you need for your conveyor. Explore the selection here!
