All of the NAAMS Pt 3: Rise Up

Continuing with NAAMS Global Components- Assembly, in this post, we will be covering risers.  In everyday use, risers are vertical sections between treads of a staircase.  In theater, risers are low platforms on stage or auditorium used so that the performer has greater prominence by standing on it.  In the NAAMS world, risers serve many purposes in the automotive industry.

Riser angle brackets are typically welded and primed so that designers can paint them for easy visibility on the manufacturing floor.  You can find them in many welding fixtures for the body in white process.  A typical NAAMS Assembly will have L blocks or NC blocks, pin retainers, shims and locating pins.  There are also clamps arms or even an air actuator to activate clamp arms.  The riser will hold this complete assembly for the fixture.

Risers allow certain dimensional heights to be reached with their variety of sizes.  There are even stack risers to increase riser height further.  Also, with welding fixtures and many other fixtures, there is bound to be part wear and replacements will be required.  With the ease of installation, risers make it easy to change out parts, simply removing that section of the fixture via the riser.  Equally, if different parts need to be welded sometimes new tooling is required, risers allow for the ease of changing tooling in fixtures.

NAAMS has maximum recommended loads for risers to hold their assembly.  The largest load a riser can hold is 496lbs.  The loads are shown offset and based on the modulus of elasticity of steel.  NAAMS recommends the material be ASTM A-36 Steel as the recommended loads are based off this material.  Riser angle brackets will come with a gray primer for colored paint.  As you can see from the assembly example the riser is the color orange for safety visibility.

NAAMS Riser angle brackets are yet another important component in the automotive industry and perhaps the underdog of NAAMS components.  Because of its load capability there is possibility that other types of industries are using risers in their welding and fixture applications or any other industrial application.  They are a versatile part and design possibilities are endless.  Let’s hope that they “rise” above it all!
