Q&A: Using RS Manager with Windows 8

Question:

Dear MISUMI Engineering Team:

We are currently using one of your single axis RS robots in our production area. We have a Windows XP laptop running the RS Manager software to control the robot and everything works great. However, we are thinking about upgrading our laptop, possibly to Windows 8. Will the change cause any problems, and if so, how can we avoid them? Thanks.

Claire K.

Answer:

Claire, we’re glad to hear that you are happy with the single axis RS robot and understand your concerns about upgrading your equipment. Since Windows XP went out of service April 8, 2014, many people are thinking about upgrading their machines. We understand that changing a production computer is enough hassle without needing to worry about the software working with the new OS, especially if you are thinking about using the latest release. Windows 8 offers a lot of advantages, such as touchscreen control (works great with RS Manager!), but it can be problematic getting device drivers to work with it.

A case in point is our USB serial programming cable for the RS robot – the drivers will not work with Windows 8. We are working to solve the problem, but in the meantime, there is a solution. The RS Manager software package is also offered with a nine pin, RS232C serial cable—however, most new computers don’t have a RS232 port. The trick is to use a USB to serial converter that is compatible with Windows 8 (most available are). Connecting the robot with the RS232 cable through the converter to the new Windows 8 machine will allow you to use the RS Manager software with your robot.

If you are ordering a new robot with the software package and are using Windows 8, simply add the “-R” option to the part number. This will include the RS Manager software with the RS232C cable. If you already have the software and just need a new cable, you can order part number EXRS-DSUB1. We also offer a USB to serial converter that has been tested with our software and Windows 8, part number 3004-235.

Upgrading can certainly be a challenge, especially when changing hardware and software all at the same time. If you are moving to Windows 8, rest assured that a simple cable and converter purchase will let you use RS Manager with your RS Robot without any problems. If you have any other questions about your RS robot or upgrading, please contact the MISUMI Engineering Team at engineering@misumiusa.com.
